Car insurance - Tips & Advice - Car Insurance for young drivers

When you are in your early 20s, even if you have been driving for several years it can be prohibitively expensive to insure your car. At Direct Line we try to make it affordable for younger drivers to be on the roads while at the same time encouraging them to become better, safer drivers.

The most important step you can take is to consider carefully what car to drive. If you are tempted to drive a sports car you need to consider that this could affect your insurance premium. Also, Direct Line will not insure any under-25s on a car with modifications (such as changing the exhaust or suspension, adding spoilers or extra lights). So, look at how much the car would cost to buy, how much it costs to repair (parts and labour), the safety record of the model of car and its possible attractiveness to thieves.

The best way of showing that you are a responsible driver is either to take a Pass Plus course or an Advanced Driving Test. The Pass Plus scheme could also reduce your insurance premiums, whatever your age. Secondly, drive carefully and try to avoid making a claim – you’ll be surprised at how much your no claims discount reduces your insurance premiums. With Direct Line’s new improved car insurance , you can earn a no claims discount (NCD) even if you’re insured on your parents’ car insurance policy.

Our Third Party Fire & Theft insurance is a good option for younger drivers as it is cheaper in most cases than a Comprehensive policy and it covers you if other people make a claim against you for injury or damage to their car or property and if your car is stolen or damaged by fire.

We think you’ll be surprised by the cost of our car insurance for under 25s, so why not get a quote and see for yourself.
